Hockey Fest To Commemorate 25th Anniversary Of NHL All-Star Game In Hartford

A celebration marking the 25th anniversary of the NHL All-Star Game in Hartford will become a focal point of Hockey Fest 2011, The Courant and Fox CT has learned.

The NHL has given its approval to Howard Baldwin's event and this means a number of former stars will appear Feb. 19 at Rentschler Field in a game against a group of Hollywood celebrities to commemorate the All-Star Game held at the XL Center on Feb. 4, 1986. The Hollywood All-Stars are built around the cast of the movie, "Mystery, Alaska."

Several games, ranging from high school to college and professional, already are planned for the outdoor rink from Feb. 11 to 20. The event is designed to revitalize the sport in Connecticut. The NHL approval gives Whalers Sports & Entertainment the right to use the NHL logo, All-Star uniforms and gives the event an official major-league tie.

A slew of Hall of Famers played in the 1986 All-Star Game, including Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier, Peter Stastny, Mike Gartner, Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey and Larry Robinson. Rangers general manager Glen Sather, then with Edmonton, coached the Campbell Conference, which lost 4-3 in overtime to the Wales Conference. Exactly who will play or attend the ceremonies has yet to be determined. A formal announcement on the All-Star Game celebration is expected today.
